The springs do all the heavy lifting on a garage door. They counterbalance somewhere between 90 and 180 kg of door, twice or more every day, and after 10,000 to 15,000 cycles (call it 7 to 12 years of normal use) the steel simply fatigues and lets go, usually with a bang people mistake for a firecracker. Once that happens, the opener alone cannot lift the door safely.

Summit Premium Services replaces torsion and extension springs across the GTA the same day you call. Our vans carry the common spring sizes, and we always match the replacement to your door's actual weight and track setup. A wrongly sized spring throws off the balance, wears out the opener and fails early, which is why we're fussy about it.

Signs Your Spring Is Broken (or About to Break)

  • Loud bang heard from the garage
  • Visible gap in the coil above the door
  • Door lifts a few inches, then stops
  • Door feels extremely heavy by hand
  • Door slams down or won't stay open
  • Cables look loose or hang off the drum
  • Door lifts crooked / one side higher
  • Squealing or straining opener
Safety first: A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury. Never try to remove, adjust or unwind one with home tools, and don't keep pressing the opener button, because that can burn out the motor or snap the cables. Keep the door closed and call (647) 696-6639.

Torsion vs. Extension Springs

Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the door and twist to lift it. They're standard on most GTA homes built since the 1980s, run smoother and last longer. Extension springs stretch along the horizontal tracks, mostly on older or low-headroom garages. We service both. When we replace extension springs we always add safety cables, so if one ever breaks again it can't whip across the garage.

Should You Replace One Spring or Both?

On a two-spring door, our advice is to do both when one breaks. They have identical mileage, so the survivor usually follows within months, and until then the door runs unbalanced. Doing the pair in one visit is cheaper than two separate calls. For busy households and commercial doors we also carry high-cycle springs rated for 25,000+ cycles.

Garage Door Spring Repair — FAQ

How much does garage door spring replacement cost in Toronto?

It depends on the spring size, the cycle rating and whether you’re doing one spring or the pair. That’s why we quote on site, free, with a firm price before any work starts. Worth knowing: replacing both springs in a single visit costs a lot less than two separate service calls a few months apart.

How long does spring replacement take?

Usually 45 to 90 minutes. The vans carry the common GTA spring sizes, so nearly all spring jobs are done in one same-day visit.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

Please don’t. Torsion springs are under extreme tension and need winding bars, correct technique and exact sizing. DIY spring injuries are among the worst garage door accidents there are. Of all the repairs to hire out, this is the one.

How long do garage door springs last?

Standard springs are rated around 10,000 cycles, which works out to 7-12 years for a typical family. If your door runs many times a day, ask about 25,000-cycle springs. They cost a bit more and last roughly two and a half times longer.

My spring broke and my car is trapped inside. Can you help today?

Yes, this is our most common emergency call. Phone (647) 696-6639 and we’ll have a technician out the same day, usually within hours, to release the door safely and replace the spring.
